TTL prides itself on the clean efficient operation of a commercial composting facility. Its current output of 40,000 tonnes/year is split 50:50 between conventional and organic compost production, making Tunnel Tech Ltd the largest supplier of organic mushroom substrate in the UK. Tunnel Tech Ltd has full Soil Association accreditation for the production and sale of organic mushroom substrate, and will continue to support this area of food production.

A brand-new indoor Phase I and Phase III complex is planned for construction on adjacent land during 2008. This move will meet Tunnel Tech’s business aspirations for the 21st century and satisfy the needs of those modern mushroom growers who require Phase III substrate in order to compete in the European marketplace.

Tunnel Tech North Ltd

Tunnel Tech North Ltd (TTN)operates from Newington Farm, a 30-acre freehold site in South Yorkshire with excellent motorway links to the rest of the country through the A1 and M62 link roads.

A purpose built facility where some £10m of investment has been made, this the most modern and well-equipped composting operation in the UK. It has the only “state of the art” Phase I bunkers and the only commercial Phase III complex in the UK.

A further £3m is scheduled to be invested in the next 12 months in upgrading to meet and exceed all environmental standards.

Current output of the site is approximately 80,000 tonnes/year with further scope for future expansion. This modern composting operation is admired and visited by growers and composters from all around the world, and is a flagship for the British mushroom industry.

English Casing Blenders

English Casing Blenders (ECB) manufactures casing soil for mushroom growers throughout the UK from a site at Pollington in East Yorkshire.

Selling 2 different blends of casing soil in bulk, large dumpy bags and small 40 litre sacks, ECB has developed the unique “reduced peat casing” (RPC) in recognition of the government’s targets for peat reduction in horticulture.

This product was developed and tested extensively with Horticulture Research International and is now widely used by environmentally aware mushroom companies who still demand the highest yield and quality in their mushrooms.

Utilising a by-product from the UK coal industry ECB has been able to replicate the high density casing soil originally only associated with deep dug peat, and replace up to 30% of it’s annual peat requirements.

Spawn running facilities

These sites are purposely operated off-site, but close to TTL and TTN, for the purpose of spawn running compost in blocks (SRB’s) before sale and dispatch to mushroom growers. The SRB product helps to shorten cycle time on the farm for growers while minimising the incidence of pest & disease.
